February 22, 2010: Of Baptism and Kaleigh Myra
My mature age has led me to love the Sacrament of Baptism, the cleansing of “original sin” or “particular sin” and the human soul being incorporated into Christ and made a member of His Body the Church. This past Sunday, my third grand-child, one-month old Kaleigh Myra was dressed in a white Irish linen christening gown as she was infused with the sanctifying grace of Baptism.
It is hard to look at such an angelic face and beautiful little body and not marvel at the goodness and miracle of a new human being. And yet, hers was a soul which was marred by the “fall” of our first parents, Adam and Eve and the consequences that action brought forth for all humankind. The human soul remains barren of supernatural life unless it is watered by the fount of graces emanating from the Holy Spirit.
The Baptism of infants is absolutely one of the most powerful and wonderful moments to witness. The parents of a baby, calling in faith upon the Church to baptize their child into the family of God, bringing upon the infant the three great gifts of the Holy Spirit, faith, hope and charity. What a great spiritual benefit given at the beginning of a child’s life by responsible and loving parents, to bring Christ into the center of a vulnerable human soul. The absolutely unspeakable beauty of a soul in a sinless state of Grace is awesome! And then the joy of watching that same child in their teen years, choose to love Christ and His Church back by choosing to be “confirmed” in the Catholic faith, accepting the teachings of the Church that Christ indeed is their savior.
The fount of life giving water, the Baptismal Font filled with blessed water, is such a perfect symbol of divine grace. The Holy Spirit through divine grace removes iniquities like a torrent of heavenly water purifying the soul; the living water which the Holy Spirit draws from the fountains of Our Lord is for the human soul. Can you imagine how wonderful it must be for God to look upon a soul in a state of Grace, loving intently its unearthly splendor and supernatural beauty? In the flash of an eye, that soul is purer, brighter and more dazzling than any snow fall!
Baptism brings to the life of a human being and the human family, the joy of being united as citizens for heaven, struggling together to journey through this life helping one another, so that all may arrive at the eternal reunion where we will all share and be refreshed in eternal living waters.
