THE HERSCHEL
The largest astronomical telescope ever sent into space is The Herschel launched in May 2009 by the European Space Agency and sent out to its position almost a million miles from earth. This location allows for observations of unprecedented detail. The Herschel’s main mirror is 1 1/2X bigger than America’s Hubble Telescope. Already The Herschel is making scientific waves as its data is challenging our previous understanding of the cosmos by showing that galaxies have been evolving over cosmic time much faster than previously thought. Today the first scientific results from Herschel are being revealed and fantastic new information is changing astronomy history.
