Laudate Dominum: A True Sanctuary

by Marie Paulhamus

High atop a mountain in southwestern Virginia, overlooking the great Appalachian range sits Laudate Dominum Hermitage, a modest, little monastery and refuge for the least favored of God’s creatures. Here, many dogs, cats, one rabbit and a few chickens live within the traditional, religious, community of the Hermits of the Contemplative Heart of Mary.

I say least favored because these animals, once loved and pampered pets, have lost their homes and/or owners. Many times as a result of death, infirmities or nursing home commitments, these loyal, little companions have lost their place in the world. And often due to their own age and infirmities no one wants them. There are animals with missing limbs, there are some who are blind, some deaf and there have been many cases of cancer arise in the aging populations, both canine and feline.

The worst infirmity of all, however, is not being loved. Amazing as it may seem, with very few people, the hermits are able to provide ample care for these refugees. As a result the atmosphere in this forty acre enclave is peaceful and full of love, as can be seen reflected in the eyes of it’s little boarders.

Brother John Joachim, who is in charge of the animals, rarely turns anyone away when they petition him for the sake of an animal. For twenty years . Br. John and Sr. Maryrellen have been taking in homeless, helpless, critters, making them official wards of the monastery for life. They have a guaranteed lifetime of protection, love and care from the members of the monastery. They do not charge anything for this service.

If an animal is sick it is nursed (hand-fed if necessary) back to health or until death arrives naturally. At this refuge the residents are always treated with the dignity they deserve as beautiful, loving creatures of God.

If I tried to explain how poor this community is, I honestly don’t think anyone would believe me. Their monastery is incomplete and they live very primitively without plumbing and comforts, giving all they have for the animals. Suffice it to say they exist on a small income along with some donations from a few animal lovers who know of their wonderful work, and an occasional patron who boards their pet with a monetary offering.

With the help and blessing of God and a few loyal supporters they barely manage pet food, people food, vet bills and the various other expenses which plague us all. These dedicated people deserve all the prayers and support of any kind we can offer them. They are genuine custodians of creation, just as God intended.

Your gracious help in Donations is so appreciated. Why not sponsor a Cat for $10 or a Dog for $15 or both for $25!! Checks may be made out to L. D.
