December 7, 2009: Betsy S. Lee–Children’s Book Author & Advocate for Greyhound Rescue
Betsy S. Lee has been a resident of St. Augustine, Florida for the past fifteen years, being an active advocate of Greyhound rescue and authoring one of the most successful children’s books series on the subject, titled “Off the Track.”
OFF THE TRACK, a nonviolent, funny story set in today’s world, follows the adventures of three greyhounds.
Meet “Libby,” a retired sports superstar; “Precious Princess” (PP), a gorgeous former show dog; and “Faun,” a runt of an Italian greyhound who, by her behavior, deserves being called the Nut. They tell you about their exciting past and present situations. You experience through their eyes, how one becomes a heroine; another finds a rewarding career in helping others as a therapy dog, and the other turns things topsy-turvy. The book allows the young reader to explore such issues as self-esteem, personal behavior, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills in a non-threatening allegorical. It also exposes young readers to easily digestible snippets of history.
The first OFF THE TRACK has been released by the The Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services in recorded format in which Betsy provided the narration. OFF THE TRACK is geared towards middle readers (for children with or without problems). Children love to read it and to read it to their younger siblings. From the feedback that she gets the adults enjoy it just as much. It stands alone in dealing with interaction of animals in handling our modern day pressures and current events.
Betsy is a recipient of the Florida Writers Association’s Royal Palm Literary Award (1st Place/ Children’s/YA), and received a Tribute from the Florida House of Representatives. She holds prestigious memberships in the American Library Association, the National League of American Pen Woman and was a participating author in the Amelia Island Book Festival and the Florida Heritage Book Festival. She is also a member of the Florida Writers Association. Betsy is widely recognized for her extensive knowledge about Greyhounds and has authored articles about greyhounds, given lectures to professional breeders and handlers. She is available to visit schools with her pet Greyhound PP and share her book program.
Betsy has been rescuing greyhounds for many years, and has been an instructor-trainer for Therapy Dogs Inc., being a facilitator at various hospitals and psychiatric facilities. Betsy and her husband Kal have one son, Marc, who is married to Dianne, and they have two children, Daniel and Rachel.
