Frank Gromling: Whales, Turtles and God’s Other Creations

Have you ever looked at some of the marvelous animals inhabiting our earth and wondered, “What can I do to protect them for future generations?”

When I was a kid living on the coast of New England, and during my 20s and 30s as I traveled the world, I never thought much about whether the creatures I ran into in my explorations would be around when I was older. Now that I’m “older,” I’ve been thinking a lot about this. So much so that I started a book publishing company to focus on certain animals which fascinate me.

Ocean Publishing is totally focused on publishing books about nature, marine life, environment and conservation. From humble beginnings (aka Frank’s Whales) to more dramatic projects, such as Climate of Uncertainty and Explore the National Marine Sanctuaries with Jean-Michel Cousteau, I have committed my time, talent and treasure to sharing my love of animals and desire to protect them from man’s adverse potential.

While all of God’s creations deserve love and protection, I have been drawn to certain species for one reason or another. We have books published or in production which introduce endangered or threatened species, including North Atlantic right whales, sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins, manatees, jellies, sharks and several others. Climate of Uncertainty, just released this week, is an even-handed look at all sides of the global warming question, thereby examining the larger picture in which the creatures live. And, finally, our four-book series with Jean-Michel Cousteau examines the undersea world of our 14 national underwater marine sanctuaries, areas Jean-Michel calls “America’s Underwater Treasures.”

I tell you all of this because it is the only way that I can demonstrate the one way in which I work to protect what I inherited from those who preceded me. Will these incredible creatures and their environments continue to offer a healthy future so those who come after us will be able to enjoy them as I have? I do not know.

What I do know is that I will continue to do my best to make a difference. And, I ask you to join me, each in your own way, with your own favorite species. Do what resonates with you. And know that it is good.
