In the News

NATIONAL PARKS: America’s Best Idea

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea appeared on PBS in America in 2009. It is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. As such, it follows in the tradition of Ken Burns’s exploration of other American inventions, such as baseball and jazz.

The narrative traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years. Using archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews, and what Burns believes is the most stunning cinematography in Florentine Films’ history, the series chronicles the steady addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them and save them from destruction. It is simultaneously a biography of compelling characters and a biography of the American landscape.

Picture of the Week

Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is a land of beauty and variety.  A day’s exploration can take you from breathtaking mountain vistas with meadows of wildflowers to colorful ocean tidepools.  Nestled in the valleys are some of the largest remnants of ancient forests left in the country.  Olympic is like many magical parks in one.  Take some time to explore its different faces! The park is located in the state of Washington at the USA/Canadian border.

Ask Susi

QUESTION: Numerous times in your writings you have alluded to the animals and creation “being hard-wired” by God to be who and what they are. And you go on to say that you believe them to be redeemed by Christ and moving to an eternal existence. Explain that.

Save the American Vacation—by Tom Ashcroft

We all know Americans take a lot less vacation time than Europeans.  C’est la vie. Now it turns out that Americans also take a lot less vacation time than their own parents did. Current Americans taking less vacation time than past. And many taking little or none at all. We’ve become the “no-vacation nation.” No one’s promoting this idea, exactly. We all know time away is good for mind and body and family and soul. And yet, it’s happened.

Discovering Catholic Writers

Matt Baglio is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, which was published by Doubleday in 2009. The book has been translated into over eighteen languages, and adapted into a feature film in 2010, starring Anthony Hopkins. Baglio also served as a technical consultant on the film, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide.

A tenacious researcher, Baglio strives to inhabit the worlds he documents in his books. In the process of working on The Rite, he interviewed close to 20 exorcists and sat in on more than 30 official Catholic exorcisms, one of only a handful of outsiders ever to do so.

In 2007, the Vatican’s chief exorcist revealed an initiative to install an exorcist in every diocese worldwide.  Three days later, the Vatican denied the story.

Father Gary Thomas was working as a parish priest in California when church leaders asked him to travel to Rome for training in the rite of exorcism. In Rome, as an apprentice to a veteran Italian exorcist, his eyes were opened to a darker side of the Catholic faith he had never known, and he came to see the battle between good and evil as never before. Journalist Matt Baglio had full access to Father Gary over the course of his training, and the astonishing story he found reveals that the phenomena of possession, demons, the Devil, and exorcism are not merely a remnant of the archaic past, but remain a fearsome power in many people’s lives even today.  The inspiration for the movie The Rite, starring Anthony Hopkins, this book provides a uniquely intimate glimpse into the chilling world of a real-life Roman Catholic exorcist.

Baglio’s interests are varied and over the years he has worked as an editor and contributor for a variety of magazines and news organizations including COLORS and the Associated Press. Currently Baglio is at work on a variety of projects, including a novel, as well as a graphic novel that is being illustrated by an artist who has worked for Marvel and DC.

Born and raised in southern California, Baglio divides his time between California and Italy.

Steward Alert

Lifetree Adventures

In the early 1970s Thom Schultz was wearing plaid bell-bottoms. He was also a real youth leader with a real challenge: can we be better at helping teenagers experience a genuine, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ?

Thom saw a need-a gaping, yawning, scratch-your-head need. So in 1974 he took a typewriter, a spare room, and five hundred bucks, and dived into exploring new ways to help people experience God’s love.

Guide to summer hiking with your dog

Be sure to pick terrain that your dog can navigate easily. Sharp rocks, thorns, thistles, under brush or trails with too much of an incline may be tough on your dog. If it needs to cross water make sure the breed is a capable swimmer. Some breeds are unable to swim due to the way their bodies function.
