November 2, 2016: St. Michael the Archangel

~by Susi Pittman

In Daniel, Chapter 12, the reading speaks to the end of Antiochus and beyond the final consummation of all things:

At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace. ~Daniel 12: 1-3

The Archangel Michael is shown to be Israel’s great support during their seventy years of captivity in Babylon.

The Archangel Saint Michael is my Angelic hero! St. Michael is revered in Catholic tradition and liturgy as the protector of the Church. He is the special patron of sick people, mariners, soldiers and grocers. And it seems too, that when the world needed a hero in the Old and New Testaments, Michael was there. So, the reading had me reflecting during the day on the other three times that Michael is mentioned in Holy Scripture.

But, the prince of the kingdom of Persia, stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes. Came to help me. Michael has come to comfort Daniel and promises to be his helper in all things. ~Daniel 10:13

Yet, when Michael the archangel was fiercely disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, he did not venture to bring against him an accusation of blasphemy, but said, ‘May the Lord rebuke thee.’ We are told here that Michael disputed over the where abouts of Moses’ body with Satan. It is for sure that the devil wanted to make some evil use of the body. ~St.Jude:1:9

And there was a battle in heaven; Michael and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels. Here is the most dramatic reference to St. Michael in Holy Scripture. John recounts the great battle in Heaven, when the wicked angels under Lucifer revolt against God. Michael, leading the faithful angels, defeats the minions of evil and drives them out. The name Michael means Who is like God? It is it is an actual assertion concerning the Angel himself. The name thus expresses the irresistibility of him to whom God gives the power to execute His behests. ~Revelations 12:7

Each time that St. Michael is mentioned, he is involved in guardianship, divine battle or spiritual battle for the good of God’s kingdom and His people.

It was six-years back, when I found myself to be in great spiritual danger. I have never had an experience like this before, nor have I since. It was approaching 3:00 AM and I had been struggling to fall asleep. It was nearly impossible to close my eyes and find any sense of peace. As I dozed off somewhat, there came to be an oppressive and evil presence about me. I could not see it…I could only sense it with every cell in my body and I found myself in the greatest fear I have ever known. I wasn’t frightened, I was terrified! I could feel my body shaking and I knew I was helpless against such power.

I had been used to saying The Saint Michael Prayer during the day, generally an acknowledgement of my paying him respects but not much beyond that. I had always thought that if I ever faced real evil I would surely call out the name of Jesus and claim his blood.

But that night, the words from my terrified lips was automatic, they were programmed as if from of old, and they exploded from my lips as I started from my rest and said…MICHAEL HELP ME!!

In an instant, the oppression was gone!

The air was light again and I was surrounded with an inestimable peace.

It was immediate and astounding! I could not believe what I had just said.

I could not believe the immediacy of relief.

From that day to this very day, I invoke Saint Michael’s protection each day with reverence. I can’t think of many days that have passed, when I haven’t approached him for assistance. He is my hero. He is AMAZING. He has the power of ALL Heaven behind him. He is my Warrior Prince!

As long as we are faced with the exposure of Satan’s attacks in this world, Saint Michael’s battle cry, Who is like God? will continue to smash all the forces of evil, and his powerful intervention for us will never cease.

Saint Michael Prayer

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts,

by the power of God,

thrust into hell Satan,

and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
