March 12, 2014: A Lenten Reflection of Love

~by Susi Pittman

Jesus spent forty days alone in the desert and His Father allowed Him to be tempted by the most powerful evil force in the universe, Satan, the Devil.

Jesus, Who above all that is, knows God’s love.

The love of the Father for the Son and the love of the Son for the Father brought forth love that we know as the Holy Spirit. Love is eternally good and eternally obedient to its source. Thus Jesus was the perfection of both.

The Father knew that His Son was completely obedient to His Will…in all things. He knew that Jesus would not fail, not give in, not compromise, and not reject the requests of His Father, because of LOVE. This love, this divine and eternal indwelling, incomprehensible to us in our human state is that which makes Jesus the fountain of divine grace.

Because of love.

Divine grace is the immeasurable treasure through which We become sons and daughters of the Father.

This is what calls us to empty ourselves of ourselves. The Father has chosen us for His beloved through His Son Jesus.

Lent is a time to reconcile our relationship with the Father. Exhorting as Saint Alphonsus de Liguori: Thou has given me graces without number—I will henceforth love no one but Thee, my God and my all. What grieves me most in my past offenses, my loving God, is not so much the punishment I have deserved, as the displeasure I have given Thee, Who are worthy of infinite love.

Lent is our time to love…love Our Father, love the Son and love the Holy Spirit. To connect with our roots, long since forgotten as we grew from our infancy and visions of angels. To recount our blessings and to empty ourselves of ourselves and offer back to the Father what is rightfully His, our very selves.

May Jesus who loves each one of us as though we were the only human ever created, fill your mind and heart with His love, and may we all return that love to Him readily and from the heart.

Peace and joy to you and yours this Lent.
