April 10, 2014: Mary, My Mother

~by Susi Pittman

Mary was ever present to her Son while He was upon the earth. The video at the top of our Home Page on this website, where Mary rushed to Jesus as he falls carrying the Cross, is THE one clip I watch again and again throughout the year to remind myself of the price paid—the torment endured—the face of true love in spite of my sin.

Jesus, dying upon the Cross gave Mary to all of us as our Mother. In doing this, Jesus was granting to her the eternal favor that all of her prayers and petitions before the throne of God would be heard.

St. Peter Damian says of Mary, All power is given to you in heaven and on earth, and nothing is impossible to you who can raise those who are in despair to the hope of salvation. Mary ever directs our spiritual gaze to her Son, Jesus. You know as Jesus hears her voice that He desires to assist her petitions because of their perfect presentation in love. Mary possesses the keys that can open Jesus’ heart.

Jesus is omnipotent by nature, Mary is so only by grace. This is affirmed by St. Anselm who says, Our Lord, O most Holy Virgin has exalted you to such a degree that by His favor all things that are possible to Him should be possible to you. St. Cosmas of Jerusalem says, For your protection is omnipotent, O Mary. Richard of St. Lawrence states, For by every law the queen enjoys the same privileges as the king. And as the power of the Son and that of the mother is the same, the mother is made omnipotent by her omnipotent Son.

How wonderful to have a Mother so full of grace, free from sin. In her we have perfect beauty, humility, ever faithful and generous in love, completely selfless, untiring, indomitable and strong, yet tender and ever holding our hand to guide us to Eternal Love.

Thank you Dear Mother for being at the side of your Son, in life and death and now in Heaven.

Thank you Dear Mother for being at my side in life and with great pleading from my heart, to be there at the moment of my death. Amen.

O Lord Jesus, you have given me great hope, because I have placed all my confidence in the Mother you have given me, my Mother of Hope.
