The United Nations Office to Outer Space Affairs
The United Nations Office to Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) was established in 1958 as a sub-committee that would deal with international response and research as regards space technology and development. It became a unit within the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs in 1962. The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) which operates within UNOOSA now boasts 70 members, one of the largest committees in the United Nations. One of their duties is to maintain close contact with governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with outer space matters which would include extra-terrestrial contact.
