October 30, 2013: Nocturnal Vigil

~by Virginia Rhys Anson, OFS

Darkness cocoons and calms my soul.
A sunrise away, my resurrection awaits.
Silhouettes exist where once maples stood.
Stars play tag with fleeting fluffs of clouds.
.
Wee twin globes reflect moon’s beams
As rabbit surveys a grassy scape,
Ever alert for peril to younglings in her nest.
.
Eyelids fight, yet vigilance wanes.
Consciousness succumbing, eyelids’ struggle’s nearly lost.
Night owl’s spirit dwindling to beckoning sleep.
.
A single raindrop sprouts my lids
As sheep sails lazily across the sky,
As a burnt orange glow outlines the hill,
Nature’s precursor to day’s molten ball.
.
Moon withers, rest from its nocturnal watch impends.
The scent of approaching rain lingers in dawn’s air,
A dewy remnant sparkling in morning’s rays.
.
Shadowed trees don form in the dim dawn light.
Mourning dove coos her somber hello
Amid maple leaves tickled by a breeze.
Perfume of lilacs flirts with expectant nose.
Currents of air carry pine’s fragrant essence.
.
Sun awakens.
Eyelids, their battle barely won, slip to needed repose.

Virginia Anson grew up in the shadows of Sandia Crest in New Mexico. Family camping trips may have sparked her passion for nature. She holds an A.S. in Electronics Technology, a B.A. in Writing, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and a certificate in Wildlife/Forestry Conservation. Her book, Mother Earth’s Caretakers, targets middle school youngsters and is published as an e-book for Kindle. Virginia is a Vietnam Era veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and her volunteer endeavors see her as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and sacristan in her parish and as a habitat steward for the National Wildlife Federation. She especially cherishes her life in the Secular Franciscan Order, following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi.
