September 26, 2011: The Greyhound Angel

~ by Mary Galvano

Heroes walk among us every day. There may be one sitting beside you right now. We don’t need to search far to find them. I know this to be true because there is a lady in my old neighborhood of Ft. Myers whose quiet-heroism helps save the lives of greyhounds.

I will call her the “greyhound angel”, as that is truly what she is. The greyhound angel works at a youth group at her church and when she is not there she is busy adopting and rescuing racing dogs greyhounds from the dog tracks that consider the dogs “no good” anymore. Once these dogs can’t race, they are often put down.

As we know, this is a sad situation for these dogs and because of people like the greyhound angel and organizations such as Catholic Stewards of Creation dogs are being saved. But our work is far from over in this department. We must as stewards keep bringing this awareness to others. These dogs need homes after they race, and God-willing we can one day stop them from racing at all.

I have met my neighbor’s beautiful greyhounds and they are anything but “no good.” These dogs are full of life! She can’t adopt all of them, though. And she is doing her best to find homes for them. Please, keep the greyhound angel and all the race dogs in your prayers.
