October 8, 2012: We Need Mary in Our Country

~ by Mary Galvano

The novena for the nation done on EWTN came to an end last week. It was a powerful novena to help bring our nation back to God. We turned to our Lady for nine days for help for our country through her intercession to her Son, Jesus Christ. She is helping us just as she helped the wedding party at Cana when they ran out of wine. Mary knew to turn to Jesus and ask him to help them out, and He did. Her requests are powerful!

Through our reflections on the scriptures and prayers for the United States of America we can remember what our country was built on. We do not get our rights from government, but rather from God. We are all created equal in His eyes. We are created in God’s image. We each have spirits that are beautifully made, from the moment of conception, that belong to Him. Our spirits are always young. Even though our bodies might not be the same as when we were younger we are the same person. Isn’t that wonderful news? We never die! We remain young and fully alive when we except Jesus into our lives. Every time we take the Eucharist He is present within us and we are saying, “Yes!” to God.

Our ancestors that came to America hundreds of years ago knew the importance of keeping the dignity of every Christian alive. They understood the hardships of not being allowed to live freely for God. The freedoms in which they were really protecting were they ways in which people wanted to live outside the church; the freedom to practice what was preached. Freedom is not freedom from the commandments and doing whatever we want, but rather freedom from evil and going against our conscience. Our politics must not affect our faith but our faith must affect our politics. We cannot separate our faith from politics because politics are our daily way of life in America. We live them everyday. Faith must have influence in that area in order for our country to be truly one nation under God. Most importantly, freedom must reign so that ALL human beings may be free, even the ones still in the womb.

We need Mary more than ever. The Blessed Mother loves us very much and will lead us to her Son, Jesus. We are her sons and daughters as Jesus clarified on the cross to St. John. In the beginning, America was first dedicated to her (America means “To Mary”) and through her most powerful intercessions she will help us all to get back on our knees and thank God for the great nation we have and to preserve the rights of human dignity for all, the human dignity that our forefathers worked so hard to preserve.
