October 15, 2012: Do Your Possessions Possess You?

~ by Mary Galvano

Are you free to follow Jesus? If not what is holding you back? We are a nation of possessions. Jesus wants us to follow Him, but we can’t if we can’t let go of what is holding us back. We must have complete faith in God.

Possessions come in many forms. Addictions to alcohol, shopping, pornography, and the woman that goes in to have an abortion claiming she has a right to choose because it is HER body are just a few of the possessions our society has.

Then Jesus, gazing at him, loved him, and he said to him: “One thing is lacking to you. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and then you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.” But he went away grieving, having been greatly saddened by the word, for he had many possessions. Mark 10:21-22

Even though Jesus said to the man in Mark to sell everything he owns and give it to the poor and the Kingdom of Heaven will be his, he didn’t tell everyone to sell their possessions. Jesus asks of us exactly what we need to do and that is what this particular man needed to do. But what possessions are you holding on to that are keeping you from being a disciple of Jesus?

True love is surrendering all that you are for the other person. Faith in God must be a complete surrender. Isn’t that what Jesus did in order to save us? He surrendered His life over to the Father in order to give us life.

Whatever is hindering your love with God call on the name of Jesus and ask Him to renew your faith. Ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit and help you to become a new creation in Him. “Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!” Psalm 90
