November 7, 2011: If We Could Only Imagine

~ by Mary Galvano

To sleep, perchance to dream.” William Shakespeare

Dreaming isn’t just for sleeping, though. Dreams are an extension of our imaginations and the imagination is the most precious gift we have from our Creator.

I met a priest, a mystic, whom frequently speaks about using this gift. He is often seen praying at church with his dog, Joshua. It is a moving sight to see them praying in the pew together, side by side. Because of his imagination he can see what this animal truly is, his brother in Christ. He says that we must practice using our imaginations everyday and learn to become mystics. He says that our imaginations are the greatest gifts that we have.

At night, he went on, he imagines seeing saints and angels, loved ones and even animals surrounding him. He knows they are there and he realizes he is not alone. We can never be lonely when we see how many souls are with us.

The imagination is powerful. Our thoughts can produce the most amazing, unbelievable outcomes. As a professional athlete I know this to be true. Winning over 100 golf events in my lifetime, it was through imagining the shot I wanted that got me to my goal. I knew a putt would go in before I even made the stroke. And it was when I didn’t imagine the outcome I wanted that I would fail.

Tonight, when you are ready to sleep, practice using your imagination. Imagine your guardian angel standing next to you. See the Blessed Mother holding your hand. Have a conversation with Jesus as you see him sitting at the foot of your bed. And as you think it, so will it become.

As one of my favorite quotes from Walt Disney says, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

Pleasant dreaming.
