May 15, 2013: What Does a Mother Do With Her Time?

~ by Mary Galvano

It is funny how the world views the vocation of motherhood these days. When asked at my daughter’s first birthday, “what do you do with your time during the day?” I was ready to give the explanations I normally give, which are explaining everything else that I am doing except being a mom…as though being a full-time mom isn’t good enough when in fact motherhood is the most important job I can have! I catch myself from time to time making excuses for wanting to be a stay-at-home mom as I am sure other moms can relate. Why was I always trying to explain away motherhood and that I was still doing important things besides raising my child? I thought for a moment about the question and replied, “I am enjoying being a Mom.”

Someone else asked me, seeing my baby in my arms, if I have been doing a lot of teaching (golf teaching). “Yes!” I said. “I am devoting all my time to one student though.” I didn’t go into explaining who that student was or what exactly I was teaching, although I am teaching my child how to putt. I do have a full-time student and she is in need of my time, 24/7. I find it difficult to explain to others that I am living my vocation, a vocation given to me by God. Yes, I do keep up with other talents, but as long as they don’t keep the most important roles of mine from being placed on the back burner. Being a wife and mother are my priority.

There are many mothers who are living their vocations faithfully. Many that I have met are such amazing women! They, too, come across the same questions and comments as I do. One was given the comment, “it must be boring being with a baby all day and not being able to do whatever you want to do.” Boring? When you love someone, time with them isn’t long enough and serving them is your greatest pleasure! Moms are in the service business. But society has changed the way the world looks at the role of a mother. Children are being taught only through the outside world when in reality their greatest lessons should be taught first from inside the homes.

If moms were not that important God wouldn’t have given them to us. Even the animals are smart enough to know their importance. They are so important that God gave the world a mother, the Blessed Mother. She is our heavenly mother. Look at her example! She truly lived her blessed vocation with true obedience to God. She did not say she needed to do something else so that she could be fulfilled and feel important. Instead she jumped in with both feet to be the woman God exalted her to be. It is only through God that we are made important. Our Blessed Mother assures all mothers that our jobs are not in vein and in need of no explanations. We have only to answer to God and if we are truly living our vocation we will live with the freedom of having Him as our only boss.

Although, Mother’s Day has already passed everyday is Mother’s Day especially in May, the month of Mother Mary. To answer the question, “what does a mother do with her time?” well there just aren’t enough hours in the day to explain.
