March 21, 2011: A Papal Blessing

~ by Mary Galvano

If you can all remember, On September 11, 1987, Pope John Paul II arrived in Miami to start a ten-day tour that would include visiting other parts of the United States. His visit was an historic and holy visit. When Pope John Paul II arrived President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan greeted him. During his time in South Florida, Pope John Paul II released white doves wearing tiny little tags around their ankles. It was a beautiful and heavenly sight.

At that time, my family lived in a small town in the middle of the state called Sebring, not at all near South Florida. Our home was situated on two acres on a small lake surrounded by lots of trees. One afternoon, sometime after the visit of the Pope, we had a mysterious visitor. The visitor was a gorgeous white dove with an “anklet.” He came right into our garage and perched himself over our chapel. Of all the homes he could have chosen he chose our home. What was truly miraculous was the fact that he had plenty of places to perch on our property including a huge oak tree, but instead he chose to be smack dab over the chapel my father had built.

The chapel was inside the garage and the door to it had a big cross on it. Every home we lived in had a chapel. Dad thought it was necessary, and for us it was. As a family we have experienced numerous miracles through having a chapel. It wasn’t a big one, but it was a peaceful place where would do our family prayers and it was filled with rescued statues and holy relics that were tossed away. We even had a bone relic of St. Jude and a life size statue of St. Theresa.

Spirit, was what we named the dove and he continued to stay over the chapel in the garage during the day and he would fly away in the evenings. We didn’t know where he would go but every morning for about three months he would return and rest there. Even when we went away for a few days he would return to us. We didn’t feed him because where we lived we were able to keep our garage door open during the day and there were plenty of places on our property to get water and food from the natural surroundings. From the looks of him he was a healthy bird. Eventually, the dove flew away and never came back. Perhaps he visited someone else.

The biggest question we asked ourselves was, why us?

Well, I believe that God can send his blessings to whomever He chooses. We truly believe this dove was a gift from God and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Spirit, was going wherever his Creator led him. God knew we needed this miracle at this time in our lives and he stayed with us until we got over some rough waters. It was truly a blessing and it brought us comfort. This dove reminded us of Jesus’ great love for us. God is always watching us, carrying us through our lives. We may not always get signs in the form of white doves but there are plenty of messages saying we are taken care of by our Creator. We don’t need to look for them…they are right in front of us.

This week let us all become more aware of the miracles in our lives. God has already given us many signs of His love and protection.

May the “Spirit” be with you all!
