July 30, 2012: One Moment in Time

~ by Mary Galvano

The Olympics are upon us and once again the world comes together in harmony to celebrate the extraordinary talents of superior athletes around the globe. These athletes are a reminder of how the impossible can become possible. They dedicate their lives to becoming the best at their sport and to become more than they thought they could be. They sacrifice so much for that one moment in time.

Each one of us is called to greatness, but how do we achieve this? We do this through the grace of God. It is only through the greatness of God that we become great. In the movie Chariots of Fire, a must see if you haven’t seen it, Eric Liddell refuses to run on Sunday in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. He is representing Great Britain and ends up having a face-off with the Prince of Wales and other members of the British athletic elite who try to persuade him to do otherwise. Eric Liddell knows he must honor God. Those who honor God, God will honor. He knows that his great speed and strength comes from the Lord. It is through God alone that he is a great runner. His speed at that time was miraculous.

On that Sunday that he refused to race he preached to a congregation in Paris while the other athletes raced. During that scene, interposed with images of athletes struggling to compete in slow motion to the haunting music by Vangelis, Liddell quotes from Isaiah 40:29-31:

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

We honor God by using the talents He has given us to the fullest and by not compromising principles. Whatever you do, do in God’s name. Give 100% of yourself to God and the mission He has set out for you. This is how we achieve that one moment in time. He will raise you up with wings as eagles.

Please, enjoy the clip from the movie Chariots of Fire with the scene of Liddell preaching during Sunday’s race.
