January 15, 2014: Listen Without Interrupting

~ by Mary Galvano

As we have begun our new year and celebrated the last days of the Christmastide, our liturgical journey has been a journey of love, that is of God’s love for us. We learned that God wants us to be His children, not His slaves and that God’s desire is to be loved not feared.

By keeping the commandments, we show God our love for Him. Jesus was sent to us as an innocent baby consumed in Love not as a terror in the night. He was not sent here to abolish the laws of God but, to fulfill them and to be an example of perfect love to us for God. Jesus showed us through his life on earth that true love has no fear. Perfect love casts out all fear ( John 4:18).

When we made our resolutions for this year, how many of us made resolutions of love? There is more violence today than ever and we are slaves in so many ways; slaves to addictions, slaves to be right, slaves to anger, slaves to possessions and the list goes on. We are not to be slaves, but sons and daughters of God as St. Benedict said. When we live as slaves to sin it is usually from a fear of something. We need to learn to love again. We can change the way we love by living out the ways of God’s love.

Fr. Wade Menezes, CPM spoke in a homily on EWTN last week on the ten ways to love. These ways are ten “social resolutions” to help you live the Ten Commandments and have the kind of love that casts out all fear. They are not always easy to do but, they are a way back to true love.

The Ten Social Resolutions:

1. Listen without interrupting: God can be speaking to you through another person. Even the person you normally can’t stand. God can be using that person you try to avoid that you don’t like to give a message to you today. Proverbs 18

2. Speak without accusing James 1:19

3. Give without sparing Proverbs 21:26

4. Pray without ceasing: Make everything a prayer. Offer up every minute of the day, your work, and your wholesome recreation to God. Colossians 1:19

5. Answer without arguing Proverbs 17:1

6. Share without pretending or exaggerating or giving forth little white lies: When you share a spoken word with someone speak the truth 100%. If you’re exaggerating that is a sign of weakness. Why do you need to pump yourself up? Love you as you are. Ephesians 4:15

7. Enjoy without complaint: Philippians 2:14

8. Trust without wavering: 1 Corinthians 13:7

9. Forgive without punishing: Because you have done this to me I won’t talk to you anymore. I will punish you by ceasing to speak to you – this person needs healing. What are you gaining? You are letting Satan strap his claws on your shoulders and hold you down if you have an attitude like that. Why let the devil hold you down? If someone has offended you, you need to go to that person in charity. Colossians 3:13

10. Promise without forgetting that you made that promise Proverbs 13:12

Place these ten social resolutions up where you can look at them daily and try to practice at least once a day. Pretty soon we will be living out God’s love and changing the world!
