February 28, 2011: Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God

~ by Mary Galvano

Do you ever feel that your life is so full of distractions there is no time to breathe? In today’s world being distracted is easy. As a society, we can often get caught up in the world’s ways, especially with the latest technology and what the media has to offer.

These distractions, as glamorous as they may seem, are far from the truth. Jesus told us to seek first the kingdom of God and everything else will be added to us. Keep your eyes upon Jesus and the things of this world will grow strangely dim. We do not need to worry about clothing or food, or what tomorrow will bring. Life is more than that. We do not need to be concerned with the ways of the world because this is not our true home. Heaven is our true home. However, we do not know when our time will be to go home. We must be prepared.

Last week, I had the honor of singing at the funeral of the young lady who was hit and killed by a car while crossing a very busy street in Jacksonville. She was only twenty-one years old. The church was packed and the many poems read by her peers were incredible. The love they showed for this young lady was awesome. Her death was a great reminder, though, that we need to live each day as though it were our last. Forgive, love and seek forgiveness. Put God first in your life; and if you do not have a relationship with Jesus, get one.

The abundance of life that I saw in the lake behind my home this morning, was in stark contrast to the final goodbyes spoken at the funeral. I was amazed at how many different kinds of birds there were. They were all out and about enjoying the sun and the day’s activities. There were wood storks dancing and nearly 100 water birds performing what appeared to be a synchronized swimming number, while the great bald eagle sat on top of a post watching. I was thinking of the many tasks I needed to get done, but not one of these birds worried about the next hour. They were living in the moment with no concerns with the world. God has them covered. He has you covered as well.

Trust in God. He will not abandon you. Keep a smile on your face and give thanks for the life He has given you. When the weight of the world is pulling you down that is the time to examine yourself to make sure you are seeking God first. It is in these times that we need look up and ask for a hand. He will raise you up! He only wants the best for you, for you are his special child.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
