December 4, 2013: Welcome to Our World, Lord!

~ by Mary Galvano

“Why don’t we sing more Christmas songs during the month of December?” “But it is not Christmas”, I try to explain, “it is Advent.”

This is a hard one to explain especially when some radio stations start playing Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving and stop on December 26th. Commercialism doesn’t help with focusing on the main reason for Christmas. This is why we hear Christmas music played so soon and see decorations up even before Thanksgiving, giving no time for the quiet time needed during the Advent season to prepare the way of the Lord.

In some parts of Europe they don’t put up any decorations or even a Christmas tree until Christmas Eve. A dear friend of mine, who happens to be a Polish priest, used to get so upset to see the commercialism of Christmas during the Advent season. He explained to me how important it was in his country to focus on Advent and then Christmas.

During our time of Advent, we are joyfully waiting for the coming of Jesus. Love the guest is on the way! He is coming into our world, becoming poor to make us rich. How are we getting ready for his arrival? This preparing for Christmas also reminds us of how we need to prepare and be ready for the return of Christ again! Advent is similar to Lent. This is a time to examine our lives and clean up any part of us that needs to be cleaned up. If you notice there is usually a special penance service during the season of Advent just like there is one during the time of Lent. Our “homes” need to be cleaned for our guest.

Be still and be quiet during this time. Contemplate and allow the Holy Spirit through Our Blessed Mother Mary to fill your heart with love as you wait for the Son of God to arrive on Christmas. As Mary carried Jesus within her womb while waiting for His arrival we can carry Jesus within our hearts. Ask for Mary’s help and intercession during this time for a beautiful, holy Advent that will give the greatest glory to God. She knew more than anyone how to wait for the Lord’s arrival. One of the first things she did was visit her cousin Elizabeth who was also with-child. This is a perfect example of her love of neighbor. This is how we prepare, by showing and giving love to our neighbors, being kind to others and patient even in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the season. Ask for her to pray for you, to have that beautiful love of hers and the same surrender to God that she had when she became his handmaid. Her prayers are powerful and can transform our lives.

So, are your ready to get ready? The time is near trim the hearth and set the table, Love the guest is on the way…Welcome to our world, Lord.

Welcome To Our World Lord Jesus
