August 20, 2012: Dreams of Painting

~ by Mary Galvano

One of my favorite people is my aunt, Dorothy Biggers Harmon, who is a famous artist in Tennessee. She is special in so many ways not only because of my relation to her but, for the beautiful person she is on the inside. She has been gifted with the hands of God to paint his creations. Recently, I was able to visit one of the places where her talent comes to life. On a large piece of land in Tennessee sits a big, old run-down home where a bunch of artists hang out together and create art.

Good artistry must start before the brush touches the canvas. Her eyes see beyond what the average person sees. She dreams of painting and creates more artwork in her head than with her brush. When with her, I learned to see a tree for more than what it is. It is a whole universe. Inside the tree are veins of sap running up and down with branches for arms and the leaves have a lot more going on than their color. She has taught me to really look at what God has created.

As we look at the world around us, try seeing it through the eyes of an artist, especially the Master Artist. We may discover a whole lot more. Everything is alive!

My mother was a microbiologist and she used to say that even a table is living. If you looked at it under a microscope you would see movement of microorganisms.

Only God could create such a universe! Each living thing and being has a purpose. Imagine that! Not one of His creations was by accident. He plans everything and its function. Yet, out of all His creations we are his greatest. We are each a masterpiece.

I have included a couple of my aunt’s paintings. Although, she has many others, these are the only ones I could share on-line out of respect for the artist. One of my favorites (not shown) is a painting of the underground roots of a tree. She captured the life going on underneath the tree trunk. It looked like a whole other world.

With an open eye we may see another world too.
