April 17, 2011: The Power of Lent

~ by Mary Galvano

Have you ever witnessed a miracle during Lent? A miracle that just can’t be explained because you thought it impossible? Oh, but nothing is impossible for God.

Lent is a journey through a desert of penance, fasting and abstinence. Lent, also, is powerful. It can bring about a deep change of heart and change in one’s life.

Sometimes when you decide to give up something for Lent, God will step in and grace you with His own personal Lenten journey made especially for you.

Have you ever noticed that? He can take you down a path of cleansing with tests that we could not have come up with on our own. And although our Lenten journey can be challenging, in the end we discover the miracle of new life, a new beginning. God shows us His great mercy. Each year I wait in anticipation for what the Lord will do next.

One year I lost my job of six years due to the economy. It happened around Ash Wednesday. This job was very demanding and I had no time for anything else or anyone for that matter. I prayed to God and even asked my own Dad at his gravesite to help me have the strength to leave it. The next day my prayer was answered. I was let go. God hears our prayers always. Answered and unanswered prayers are a mystery, either way, leading us to what is good for us. I was given a new freedom and I received something greater in return.

Around Holy Week I reconnected with an old friend after eighteen years. He married me!

This past week I was able to witness another miracle, a re-uniting of three sisters that haven’t seen each other in ten years. Two of the sisters are breast cancer survivors and both have experienced death. It was amazing to see these ladies come together after so long and just pick up from where they left off. Each one had gone through so much in their lives to finally get to this moment in time of healing, love, and laughter. Of course, this miracle would happen during Lent and close to Holy Week. My stories can go on and on.

Thank God for the miracle of Lent. Jesus went through His journey and died on the cross for each of us so that we may have new life. Through Jesus, God shows His great mercy.

Take a look back through the years. How many times has God raised you up with His mercy? You may discover the many miracles the Lord has freely given you.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Have a blessed Holy Week!
