September 6, 2010: Matthew Brown, USMC

This week, I want to share an article sent to me from Matthew Brown who appears on pages 196-199 of TEAR IN THE DESERT. It is a very poignant article dealing with the reality of recovering from the war. I am honored to be the priest he refers to in the article. I am in contact with his parents and Matthew who is married and the father of two. I am honored to be his friend. This is a really wonderful article on Veterans moving on although forever changed. Isn’t that what every Eucharist is supposed to do? Every time we enter into a church to celebrate the Body and Blood of Jesus, we need to come out irrevocably changed. Jesus began his ministry by standing up in the synagogue and proclaiming the Scripture passage in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
God sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
recovery of sight to the blind
to let the oppressed go free
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord!

After Jesus rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant and sat down; the eyes of all in the synagogue were upon him. Jesus then said,

“Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing!”

Then Jesus was at first celebrated and praised, but it turned into rage against him and attempts at his life within minutes.

Beloved, war is a nasty thing that never has a good ending. There is one exception. When we go to war with only one weapon of Love, then we have a fighting chance.

Love, joy, peace,

Father Ron Moses +
