Susi Pittman, “Susi of Assisi”
A lifetime of caring for the discarded “lesser brethren.”

About SUSI PITTMAN,

author of Animals in Heaven? Catholics Want to Know!

Susi Pittman grew up in Miami, Florida, in a home that wasn’t particularly religious. Therefore, her family was surprised when eight-year-old Pittman declared that she was going to become Catholic. At an early age, she knew God had a purpose for her. Always an animal lover, Pittman saw a specific calling for a book about whether or not animals go to heaven in a chance meeting with a small rabbit.

“Miss Bunny Blueberry” came into Pittman’s life in the clenched jaws of a coach whip snake on the beach in St. Augustine, Florida. She rescued the baby hare and nursed her to health. However, the struggle with the snake left a mark. A nerve was pinched in the rabbit’s neck, forever disabling her back legs. “Miss Bunny Blueberry” lived with the family for five years and showed Pittman that even a disabled rabbit has a purpose in life.

Often referred to as “Susi of Assisi,” Pittman has nursed, rescued or adopted 79 animals and takes seriously the need to attend to what Saint Francis of Assisi called our “lesser brethren.” Eight days before her husband, Greg, succumbed to a long-fought battle with throat cancer, he made Pittman promise to finish writing and publish her book on the destiny of animals and creation. Animals in Heaven? Catholics Want to Know!: Recognizing Divine Providence at Work in Creation is the result of that work. The book provides information on the Catholic Church’s tenets and evidential support indicating creation has its order, purpose and destiny in God.

Pittman is also the creator of the interactive website www.catholicStewardsofCreation.com, offering current information on educational and advocacy opportunities in the good stewardship of the earth and its creatures. As a devout Catholic and steward of creation, Pittman is a committed conservationist and spends much of her time on ecological and animal issues.

She serves as an advocate for the Florida Catholic Conference. Previously, Pittman worked as a sales executive and on-air personality for WQPD-FM, as well as a feature writer and photographer for a New York Times subsidiary. Pittman resides in St. Augustine, FL. (near Jacksonville) with her daughter, son-in-law, two grandchildren and 14 rescued animals.
